On September 2, 2015, I boarded a one-way flight from Boston to San Diego to begin my new life.

I had an Airbnb that week while I figured things out, as I had no job and no home when I moved here.

The only thing I did have? A rock-solid belief that “failure wasn’t an option”.

I had a drink in my hand that entire cross-country flight, so naturally when I landed, I was poster-child “white girl wasted”. And here was the truth: when I looked around at everyone around me at that time, their lives all seemed to be falling into place:

They were all engaged and/or married. They were all starting families.
They were all doing the same things that, on paper, seemed to be the thing to do to be happy and successful.

Except I didn’t have any of those things that they all had.

And when I stopped to take an inventory of my life, I was just existing - waking up hungover most days, going to an ok job that I liked, coming home to an ok home I was renting, being a slave to the dating apps and becoming desperate to meet someone who liked me, and spending all my time being a bar hopping socialite around the city doing what I did best: drinking.

I wish I knew alcohol was stealing my joy and light, making me feel less than in every and all situations that I had no business paying any mind to.

If I knew then what I know now, that my path was always meant to be different, I would’ve saved myself a LOT of years thinking something was wrong and broken with me, since my life didn’t follow the traditional societal timeline.

But, if I knew that then, my life wouldn’t have taken me here, to this moment with you, reading my blog about my cross-country move in 2015, that was the most magnificent unraveling of everything I thought I had to be, in order to become everything that I am today.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in a life that doesn’t feel like your own, know this: it’s never too late to change the narrative. Maybe alcohol is stealing your light too, or maybe you’re just ready for more. Either way, you’re not alone. If you want to learn more about my story, you can read how my life changed after a successful Dry January in 2017.
